贵州榕江曾经是全国最后一批脱贫摘帽的贫困县，是中央明确挂牌督战的贫困县之一。“村超”诞生于榕江，不是无中生有，而是植根于当地深厚的群众基础。榕江群众早些年就有农闲时踢球的风俗。新时代以来，党和国家高度重视全民健身事业，把全民健身作为全面建成小康社会的重要组成部分。2021年5月，榕江被评为全国首批县域足球典型县，乡村足球赛、周末足球赛等本身就是榕江的一个特色和品牌。
